In most cases, when pupils complete their secondary education and get their diploma, they usually go straight to college or university. But a few decide not to and rather take a year off. What are their reasons? What about the pros and cons of such a decision?
Taking a year off may indeed be scary. It means leaving home, the safety it used to provide, the familiar environment in which you used to live. It implies leaving your friends who may not be interested in taking a gap year. You may even have to explain your close-ones your decision, perhaps justify your move. You have to be adamant about your decision and your motivations.
Besides, taking a gap year also means travelling to a far-off place where you may face dangerous situations not speaking the language, not having a deep knowledge of the local culture.
On the other hand, this is undoubtedly a choice likely to have a positive impact on your life. First because it takes courage to leave one's home and relatives at such a young age. Second, it is a fulfilling experience as you have to learn to understand people who think differently, who behave differently and who speak a foreign language.
All this has to be undertaken on your own, with no help from your friends or family. It is a solitary journey indeed. Following your gap year, you may not realise it at once, but something in you will have definitely changed. You will have grown up into a young adult capable of managing challenging situations all by yourself.
As a conclusion, we can say that although it may be a daunting experience, taking a gap year can be considered as a rite of passage between childhood and adulthood.
